beeskin beeswax wraps

Single use plastic is one of the biggest challenges of our time. Microplastic is now ubiquitous and is even found in almost all purchased water. A WWF study has shown that each one of us eats about one credit card of plastic per week.  Plastic and the plasticizers it contains are known to cause serious illnesses such as unfeasibility, ADHD and even cancer.
Of course, there are uses where it is not possible to do without plastic. For example, many industrial applications or medical products rely on plastic-based parts. Fortunately, however, great efforts are already being made to recycle plastic or replace it with sustainable alternatives. However, the plastic film we use at home to wrap cheese or sandwiches or just quickly cover a bowl cannot be recycled. This is due to the nature of the film and the plasticisers it contains, which mean that modern recycling machines cannot process it.

Our beeskin beeswax wraps are purely natural, guaranteed to be reusable for 1 year, and at the end of their life they are easily disposed of in the compost or used as a natural fire starter. Due to the unique properties of the raw materials, food will keep fresh even longer. Considering that we waste about 75kg of food per capita per year, this is a pretty important aspect of our beeskins.
Every single beeskin is made in Berlin and packed and shipped in our own production facility. This way we can guarantee you the highest quality possible.

Certified and guaranteed to last. Of course.

Our products comply with the strict requirements of GOTS. These rules ensure the organic status of textiles from harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing all the way to labelling in order to provide credible assurance to the consumer.
There are no pesticides used when growing the cotton, which is picked by hand. The machines used in production have to work without petroleum. Processing the yarn and printing process have to comply with strict rules in order to ensure a sustainable fabric production.
There is no child work or lavery involved and the employees are paid fair prices.
Of course monitoring does not stop at the fabric production. Even in our own production in Berlin we follow rules of what cleaning agents we use to clean our working materials and machines.

All of our beeskins are tested in an external laboratory for pesticides, harmful substances and heavy metals.

Since even the printing inks for paper can contain harmful chemicals which can migrate onto food, all of our printed packaging is save and approved for direct food contact. The paper we use is certified sustainable and is imported from Sweden, where for every tree cut off, three new ones are planted.

Our products comply with EU regulation 1935/2004 and have even been tested by TÜV.

Guaranteed to last.

Our goal is to enable as many people as possible to save on single use plastic foil. For this reason we want to offer you beeskins at a reasonable price without having to compromise on the quality. You can use and reuse beeskins for 1 year, if you take good care of them. If, for some reason, you are not happy with your beeskins within that 1 year we will replace your beeskin with a new one at no cost.

Simply send us an email and write a short explanation, add a picture of the beeskin and add a scan or picture of your receipt where we can see the date of purchase. We will be in touch within 36 hours.

Only four natural ingredients

100% pure beeswax. fOur wax is strictly tested for residues of harmful substances and tested for 180! pesticides. In comparison: beeswax from beekeepers which are certified "Organic" is generally tested for only 15 pesticides. Since no one can control, where bees ultimately fly to, we believe in testing rather than a "label".

Bees do not only collect nectar from flowers but also fly to trees to collect propolis, which is also regarded as "natural antibiotic". Bees use Propolis to disinfect the entrance of their hive and to keep germs and bacteria out. It has an antibacterial and antiviral effect.

European beekeepers remove part of the beeswax to help the bees and ensure the health of the colony. No new wax is removed and never so much that it could harm the bees.

Cotton (organic)

Our cotton is an organic cotton  which, as well as the print, is certified organic according to the highest standard of GOTS (read above for more details). We believe that it is important to source our raw materials as close as possible. For that reason we decided to buy our raw fabric in Turkey rather than further away for cheaper prices.

The fabric is produced especially for us based on our requirements and experience. Since the fabric is a loosely woven, 100% cotton fabric, your food can breathe, but is still protected from drying out.

Colophane (distilled resin)

Tree resin is secreted from the trees to protect against germs, viruses and fungi. We use the so-called rosin. When resin is distilled, and thus turpentine oil and liquid evaporate and are filtered out, the hard rosin remains. The tree resin we use comes from pine trees in Portugal and Austria. The resin makes your beeskins more sticky and helps to keep your food fresh for longer.

Did you know that there is a wine in Greece, the Retsina wine, which gets its taste from added resin? Resin is also used in the food industry, for instance for chewing gum.

If you are allergic to colophane (which is distilled resin) you should not use beeswax wraps in general.

Jojoba oil (organic)

Just as our fabric, our Jojoba Oil is certified organic. Despite its name, jojoba oil is not actually an oil, but a wax with many great properties.

At room temperature it is liquid and soft, but becomes hard at cold temperatures. Jojoba oil naturally contains a lot of vitamin E – a natural preservative. The oil prevents the wax coating of your beeskins from cracking in the refrigerator. You can even put your beeskin into the freezer. Due to the jojoba oil, the wax coating can handle the differences in temperatures easily. Our Jojoba oil comes from Israel, from non-occupied areas since the Jojoba tree grows in hot and dry conditions. Often times we are asked, why we use Jojoba oil and not another oil such as coconut. Please have a look at this statement from us.

By the way, besides working great in our beeskin beeswax wraps, jojoba oil can also be used in the bathroom as skin care, for the hair or even for facial cleansing.

How to use beeskin

Do wrap.

You will certainly want to use your beeskin very quickly. Using it is very simple:

Simply lay your beeskin over a plate, bowl or glass and wrap it over the edges. You can also place your food directly onto beeskin. Wrap it and seal it tight.

Thanks to the warmth of your hands, beeskin will gently adhere to smooth surfaces and to itself, similar to plastic film. (Only that it does not stick so annoyingly to itself so you end up throwing away a piece of all tangled up plastic foil before even wrapping anything).

Nous rendons le travail à domicile possible

You can also use beeskin in the freezer. Make sure to check after 4 weeks. Your food still breathes and could start to dry out otherwise.

Don't wrap.

Like everything else, beeskin has its limits. But fortunately only a few small ones.

beeskin beeswax wraps should NOT come into direct contact with raw meat, fish and pineapple.

This is simply because you can not wash the wraps hot, which is very important with steak tartare, raw chicken breast and raw meat or raw fish. Just put raw meat in a bowl and then cover the bowl with your beeskin. Pineapple has an enzyme which dissolves the wax coating.

Cold cuts such as cooked ham, smoked ham, salami etc. you can wrap. After usage wash it off as described below.

Greasy or oily foods can cause beeswax to dissolve. The smell and/or the taste of beeswax and resin could to transfer to the food. This is causes no harm, because all ingredients are themselves considered food (honey is sold with honeycomb, jojoba oil is included in toothpaste and there is the Greek wine Retsina which is flavored by added resin) – it can taste a bit strange at best. So just give it a try. Alternatively, you can put the food in a jar and then cover it with beeskin.

Clean your beeskin

Run your beeskin beeswax wrap under cold water only, and run your fingers over your wrap to remove any excess, as if rinsing a plate. Don’t wash or rub your wrap vigorously with a rough sponge or brush. You may use the soft side of a sponge, gently, and we recommend you use an eco-friendly dish soap with no “alcohol“ within the first 4 ingredients. Alcohol will dissolve the beeswax and tree resin.

After having cleaned your beeskin, pat it dry with a kitchen towel or let it air-dry. Don’t set your beeskin beeswax on a radiator since your wrap is not particularly fond of heat. Also, your beeskin beeswax wrap does not fancy being wrung or twisted in any way and dislikes your dishwasher and microwave oven. If something should get moldy, simply gently wipe the cloth with some vinegar.

After a while, your beeskin will get a patina and certainly a stain or two. If the wrinkles are too much for you or you would like to have more wax on the beeskin again, you can simply give it a facelift. With our repair kit you can easily apply a completely new layer of wax. Just take a look at it here

Please dispose of your beeskin if you see mould stains in the beeskin. You can now either just throw it on the compost or use it as a non-toxic fire starter.

What else you might find helpful

Dedicate it

If you want to cover a can of dog or cat food, we recommend to dedicate one and the same wrap to your four-legged friend. Also for onions and garlic, which are in direct contact with beeskin, it is advisable to reserve a cloth only for this purpose (so you will not end up with onion-flavoured apple).

Store it

Use beeskin beeswax wraps as you would use cling film. In addition, it is a great companion at the picnic, at school or at work. Because beeskin beeswax wraps are stronger than clingfilm you can use them as well as a portable plate (practically on car trips). And if you do not want to use your cloth anymore after 1 year (and good care) it is suitable as a grill or fireplace lighterStore your dry beeskins in a drawer, cupboard or, as we prefer, in a big glass jar. (but make sure to keep it away from heat)

Fold a little envelope for nuts and raisins (or gummy-bears...) to go
