homemade dishwashing powder in a glass jar

Dishwasher Detergent

To make your own dishwasher powder detergent is easy, takes less than five minutes and you will only need four natural ingredients.

You will need:
  • 250 g Sodium Carbonate
  • 250 g Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate
  • 250 g Citric Acid
  • 5 drops of Essential Oils (optional)
You can get these ingredients at your local drugstore. If not, you can buy them online. Some suggestions would be:

1. Weigh equal parts of the ingredients

Sodium Carbonate (aka washing soda)

Because of Sodium Carbonate dirt and grease form water soluble products. These are then simply washed away with water.

Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (aka natron)

Most common known in baking, sodium Hydrogen Carbonate reacts with acid and makes dough rise. It is a mild disinfectant and can be used as an effective fungicide against some organisms. It is even used in toothpaste and deodorants.

Citric Acid

Turns hard water soft and removes hard water stains from glass without scrubbing.

Essential Oil

We recommend lemongrass, orange, tea tree or mint for a fresh and clean smell.

2. Mix all the ingredients in a glas jar and add some smell.

There are many wonderful essential oils you can use. This is optional and has no effect on the cleaning power of your homemade dishwashing powder.

Ready to go: add one tablespoon of powder into the compartment of your dishwasher and have your dishes cleaned naturally and plasticfree.
